Do I Need a Panel Upgrade Before Installing an EV Charger?

One of the most common questions we get from LA homeowners. Here's how to know if your panel can handle a Level 2 charger — and what to do if it can't.

If you're considering installing a Level 2 EV charger at your Los Angeles home, one of the first things we'll check is your electrical panel. Most Level 2 chargers require a dedicated 40–50 amp circuit, which means your panel needs enough capacity to handle the additional load.

When You Don't Need a Panel Upgrade

If your home already has a 200-amp panel with available breaker slots, you're likely good to go. We can install a dedicated circuit for your EV charger without upgrading the panel. This is the case for most newer homes in Los Angeles.

When You Do Need a Panel Upgrade

If your home has a 100-amp panel (common in homes built before the 1990s), adding a 40-amp EV charger circuit may exceed your panel's capacity. In this case, we'll recommend upgrading to a 200-amp panel before installing the charger.

Signs you may need a panel upgrade include: breakers that trip frequently, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco brand panel, or a panel with no available breaker slots.

The EZ Power & Light Approach

We assess your panel as part of every EV charger quote — at no extra charge. If a panel upgrade is needed, we'll bundle both jobs into one flat-rate quote so you know exactly what you're paying before work begins.
