Do I need a panel upgrade before installing a Level 2 EV charger?
Most Los Angeles homes with a 200-amp panel do not need an upgrade. Homes with 100-amp panels often do. We run a free load calculation as part of every EV charger quote so you know before committing.
A Level 2 charger typically needs a dedicated 40 or 50 amp circuit. On a 200A panel with typical residential load, that is well within capacity. On a 100A panel (common in pre-1995 homes), adding a 50A EV circuit can push peak demand over the utility service limit. We check this in about 15 minutes using NEC Article 220 load calc methodology.
