What color temperature should my recessed lights be?

2700K (warm) for living rooms and bedrooms. 3000K (soft white) for kitchens. 3500–4000K for garages and workshops. Color-selectable cans let you pick per-fixture.

Mixing color temperatures in one room looks bad. If you already have 2700K elsewhere, match it. Modern LED cans usually have a color-temp switch on the back so you can choose per install.

How much does recessed lighting cost in LA?

Typical $110–$180 per can installed, plus $40–$90 per dimmer. A 15-can job runs around $1,800–$2,900 flat rate. Permits add $180–$280 when required.

Labor is the biggest cost. Access matters — attic above drops cost, finished second-story ceilings (fish work) cost more. We quote flat rate based on walkthrough.

Lighting terms worth knowing

Electrical work uses specific terms. Here is what the jargon means in plain English.

IC-rated
Insulation Contact rated — recessed fixture safe for direct contact with ceiling insulation. Required by code in most installs.
CCT
Correlated Color Temperature — measured in Kelvin. Lower = warmer (orange), higher = cooler (blue).
ELV dimmer
Electronic Low Voltage dimmer — matched to LED fixtures for smooth dimming without flicker.
