Recessed lighting is one of those upgrades that dramatically improves how a home looks and feels for a fraction of the cost of a remodel. If you've got popcorn ceilings, a single 1970s boob light in the middle of the kitchen, or just dated fixtures throughout, 10–20 recessed LED cans will transform the space in a day or two. Here's the realistic breakdown.
What You're Paying For
Retrofit recessed lighting install cost = labor (the biggest component) + fixtures + dimmer + misc materials + permit (on larger jobs). In LA as of 2026:
- Per can installed (typical): $110–$180 including fixture
- Per dimmer: $40–$90 depending on type
- Permit (if required): $180–$280
Most of our jobs: 10–20 cans. That's $1,300–$3,600 for a typical install, flat rate quoted.
Fixture Types
Retrofit LED trim
The modern standard. 4" or 6" LED integrated fixtures (Halo, Juno, Lithonia) that install in ~15 minutes per hole. Available in 2700K (warm), 3000K (soft white), 4000K (cool), and color-selectable versions. The color-selectable ones (CCT switches on the back) are great because you can pick the temperature to match the rest of your lighting without guessing.
Smart fixtures (Lutron, Hue)
Dimmable and color-tunable via app or smart switch. Cost $40–$80 per fixture extra but worth it for key areas like kitchen or great room.
Old-style can + screw-in LED
We don't recommend this anymore. Integrated LED retrofit trims are brighter, last longer, and are cheaper over the lifetime.
Layout Matters
Bad recessed lighting layout ruins a ceiling. We follow the guidelines:
- Ceiling height ÷ 2 = approximate spacing between cans
- Keep cans 18–24" off walls for most applications
- Align with architectural features (beams, windows, islands)
- Create zones with separate dimmers (task lighting over island, general ambient in room)
- For kitchens: 1 can per 4–5 sq ft of counter prep area
We lay out every job before cutting. Chalk line and laser. Client approves before any holes are made.
Wiring Strategy
Two approaches:
Attic access
If you have accessible attic space above the install, we run wire through the attic and fish down to each fixture location. Fastest and cleanest. Typical for 1-story SFV ranches.
No attic / second-floor ceiling
We fish cable between joists using flex bits and cable pulls. More careful work, takes longer, sometimes requires a few access holes in the ceiling that get patched. For multi-story homes in Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and Encino, this is the typical approach.
The "Do I Need a Permit" Question
In the City of LA, adding branch circuits or extensive lighting typically triggers a permit. Simple additions (a few cans on an existing circuit) sometimes fall under minor work. We err on the side of permitting — the permit fee is small compared to the cost of dealing with an unpermitted install showing up during escrow.
Dimmers Are Not Optional
Cheap non-dimmable switches on LED cans is amateur hour. Dimmers let you set ambiance, extend fixture life, and dramatically improve how the room feels at different times of day. Good dimmers for LED: Lutron Diva ELV, Leviton Decora Smart, Lutron Caseta (wireless smart). Budget about $40–$90 per dimmer.
Common Mistakes by Other Installers
- Cans too close together (overlit) or too far apart (dark zones)
- Wrong color temperature (cool white in a living room feels like an office)
- Non-dimmable fixtures on regular switches
- Poor patch work if drywall is damaged during install
- Cutting into a structural joist or hvac duct
- Not using IC-rated fixtures where insulation contacts the can (fire risk)
