The two brands that dominate the residential standby generator market in Southern California are Generac and Kohler. Briggs & Stratton and Cummins have their loyalists, but 95% of the units we install for homeowners in LA and the Valley are one of these two. Here's the real-world breakdown.
At a Glance
- Generac — market leader, wider dealer network, lower install cost, more sizes available
- Kohler — quieter operation, better enclosure, longer engine warranty, higher price
Generac: The Ubiquitous Choice
Generac owns roughly 70% of the residential standby market. That dominance has practical benefits: parts are everywhere, every dealer stocks them, and the Mobile Link monitoring app is the best in the industry. Generac's Guardian series — 10kW to 26kW air-cooled — covers the vast majority of homes we service.
Pros: 5-year limited warranty standard, excellent app integration, competitive pricing. A 22kW Guardian will run you roughly $5,500–$6,500 for the unit itself, $3,500–$5,500 for install depending on gas line and ATS complexity.
Cons: Generac has had documented issues with the 2018–2020 generation of evolution controller boards (failures at 2–4 years). The current gen is more reliable but we still see occasional controller swaps under warranty. Noise level at full load is 65–70 dB measured at 23 feet — louder than Kohler.
Kohler: The Quieter Premium Option
Kohler's 14RESA, 20RESC, and 26RCA lines are mechanically excellent. The engines are Kohler Command PRO — the same engines used in commercial applications with 50,000+ hour lifespans. Enclosures are built heavier, use better sound insulation, and look more upscale.
Pros: 5-year comprehensive warranty (better than Generac's limited), quieter by 3–6 dB typically, stronger build quality. Kohler also handles large transient loads (AC compressor startup) more gracefully. Unit cost runs $7,500–$9,500 for a 20kW.
Cons: Price. A 20kW Kohler installed is often $3,000–$5,000 more than an equivalent Generac. Fewer dealers means slower parts and service if something goes wrong. The OnCue app is functional but less polished than Mobile Link.
How to Decide
Pick Generac if:
- You're budget-conscious but want a reliable whole-home solution
- You want the best app and remote monitoring
- You value wide dealer/service network (easier if you ever move)
- Your home is 1,500–4,000 sq ft and you want 14–26kW
Pick Kohler if:
- Noise matters — you have close neighbors or a quiet neighborhood (hello Encino and Studio City)
- You want top-tier build quality and are willing to pay for it
- You're running a large house with heavy transient loads
- You want the longest possible engine life
Installation Considerations (Both Brands)
Regardless of brand, a proper install includes: a concrete pad at least 18" off the house, gas line sized per the manufacturer's BTU requirement (we size with SoCalGas specs, not the generator's minimum), automatic transfer switch at the main panel, battery maintained with a trickle charger, and annual maintenance. Skimping on any of these causes problems later — we've repaired plenty of DIY or unlicensed installs that had undersized gas lines or improperly grounded ATS setups.
Maintenance
Both brands need annual maintenance: oil change, filter, spark plug inspection, battery test. Generac's intervals are slightly longer (200 hours) vs Kohler (100 hours for first service). Our service plan covers either brand at the same rate.
Warranty Fine Print
Generac's 5-year is a "limited" warranty — cosmetics and some parts are excluded. Kohler's 5-year is closer to bumper-to-bumper. Both require annual maintenance documentation to stay valid, which is why we log every service call with dates and oil hours.
Our Take
For 80% of LA homes in the 14–22kW range, a Generac Guardian is the right call — solid product, better price, easier service. For homes where noise matters, where heavy AC loads are in play, or where the client wants premium everything, Kohler is worth the premium. Either way we'll do a proper load calc and recommend the right size. See our generator installation page or call 818-852-4910 for a walk-through quote.
